I've been in the pageant industry for nearly 9 years now, recently coming back from placing at the YAMI International finals in Texas and there is always parts of the competition you can improve on but I am going to give you my top tips to being the best you when you are on that stage!
1. Do your pageant research!
When I've entered a pageant, I've always looked on their social media pages, looked at their past queens and checked out their website. I also check out where the pageant leads to, my dream was always to compete in America and that dream finally came true when I entered Young European International pageant and won my trip to Texas! I want to make sure that I am representing the right pageant, after all I got into pageants to build my confidence and help others, I am not a model but I love walking on that stage in my pageant outfits after knowing I have worn my regional sash to death through appearances. Make sure when you chose a pageant, if they do have a chosen charity then make sure it's a just giving page, NEVER give over cash unless you know where it is going to go, too many pageants have had this happen and it's better to not get involved in a scandal!
2. Believe in yourself!
Everyone in pageants are unique, whether you are 50 or 20, tall or short, big or small, tattooed or freckled, there is no stereotype of a pageant girl. What makes you stand out from all the rest of the girls is you! I won my title of Young European International Ms when I was five months pregnant, I flew to Texas 8 weeks after having a C Section with my little girl, there are so many different girls that compete and have their own journey. Don't worry about the other girls in your category but focus on YOU!
3. Practice makes Perfect
Of course there is no such thing as perfect but its how the old saying goes! You wouldn't go into an exam without reading up about the subject, or take your driving test without taking any lessons so competing in pageants should be no different! For example if you buy higher heels but don't wear them until the final, your walk will be different plus you might not even be able to walk in them! Of course being a personal trainer it's great to use our studio as practice so ask your local gym if there is no one in the studio if you can practice your walks! Alternatively use your hallway, even a small space is enough to focus on your posing and see how you stand in you heels. Interviews are easier to practice as you can do this anywhere, find questions online, talk to your friends, focus on what you want to say in your interview. Of course we have all had interviews for university, for jobs, treat it like any other interview!
4. Don't overstretch yourself
I mean this both on time and money! Just because your dress cost you £30 in the sale, it doesn't make it any less great than the girl wearing a £1000 dress. Its not how much the dress costs, but how well the dress fits YOU, suits you and how you make it work. Money doesn't buy you a crown! I've won pageants using my trusty glue gun, I've brought brand new dresses but I've also borrowed or bought third hand dresses. It's also the same with time as well. It's great to do appearances and make your title known, but it's also important to take some time for you. Don't over work yourself and get anxiety about not doing enough. it's not compulsory to do a thousand appearances but you want to wear your sash because you want to, not because you have to!
5. Enjoy yourself!
Pageants are meant to be fun, a weekend away to enjoy meeting new friends, wearing amazing gowns and enjoying yourself. Yes there is the competition but if you focus too much on the competition, you won't enjoy the moments getting to that final. Be kind to all the contestants as you never know who could be judging you in a few years time! Enjoy wearing that sash, whether its doing community work or meeting up with new pageant friends, wearing your sash in a beautiful gown or wearing it with your gym clothes as you are running a fun run for charity. Enjoy the journey because once the fun goes out of your pageant life, you should hang up those heels and take on a new journey. I nearly hung up my heels last year after competing in a final and I was in huge amounts of pain, I wanted to take a step back and support my fellow queen sisters but then YEMI came around and I am so glad I decided to make my last pageant the best final I have competed in! I am loving my YEMI journey and will be sad when I handover my crown in November! But fingers crossed my Wiltshire girls will take all the crowns and we can continue the YEMI journey together!!
